Robert Hannant says it is his appreciation of and attention to art direction that have won him many national and international awards over the years as a commercial director. Some of his clients were Nike, Neiman Marcus, American Airlines, AT&T and Negra Modelo.
“The best art-directed city in the United States” is one of the many ways Robert describes New Orleans. “There is so much beauty that has been here for so long and so much that has been so tastefully reworked, that even on routes that I travel regularly, I can find ten, twenty, thirty new shots to take at most times of the day.”
His morning bike ride takes him from his home in the Bywater section of New Orleans, through the historic Faubourg Marigny. He then pedals his way across the French Quarter and back along the Mississippi River where he makes a quick dive back into the Quarter to pick up a baguette or two at his favorite French Bakery, Croissant d’Or.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Hannant has lived in Nigeria, South Africa, Iran, Austria and England. On this side of the Atlantic he has lived in Toronto, Ottawa, Boston and Dallas with ventures into New York and Los Angeles. He cites Vienna, Austria as the place where the rich culture, architecture and grand style formed a lot of his visual style and appreciation of the macabre.
‘There is no easy way to describe the exact appeal of New Orleans, but after trips to other cities in America I am always thrilled to return to the combination of influences that make this city so visually appealing. Culturally it is also complex and contradictory, but a ride through this town in silence is always a treat. There is an overriding aura of mystery that I want people to see in my photographs.”
